Live Performance Template

$5

This is my personal touchdesigner template for doing live performances either IRL or on stream. This template also can just be a darn good jumping off point for pretty much any touchdesigner project.

Note: this toe leverages midi a lot, so some experience hooking up your midi board and mapping might be needed. I also use this primarily for live stream set ups where I am piping audio from Spotify into touchdesigner. I do this through a tool called VB cable, some set up with that might be helpful but not required.

Launching this .toe...

you'll find a project base with two windows serving the output:

  • Monitor -- this is a window you will keep directly in front of you and not what audience sees.
  • Performance -- this is the window which the audience will see.

This allows you to flash a bumper or text on the screen while you cycle through your monitor to find the right visual for the next queue. More on the bumper and text later.

Inside the project...

you'll find a network separated by several color coded annotation boxes:

  • Visual bank -- this is an array of bases, each containing your visual projects/scenes. Grab the contents of your touchdesigner projects and paste them into each viz_ base. Inside each base are in's for audio, res, midi and speed so you can utilize all these signals within your project. The visual bank is connected to a main switch which is controlled by the S1 midi nob and blending is controlled by midi B1.

  • Audio Processing -- this file only contains the bare necessities for processing audio. We are bringing audio in via VB Cable (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HR6Ot3w6qTo), serving it out to our internal speakers, controlling volume with S8 nob and splitting processed audio and audio signal speed out and into each of our bases. Tweaking this section is totally recommended as I didn't do any curation on the processed audio.

  • Global Resolution -- a simple constant CHOP to control resolution for everything in one place.

  • Midi Control -- this section will require some set up with the midi device mapper dialogue. If you're new to this, see this tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLeghJmFBh0&t=3s. Each midi slider and button are separated out via selects and hooked into visual bases. Add more selects to add more sliders and buttons as your device requires. Go crazy with use cases for the midi board. By default I have sliders S1 for the main switch, S3 and S4 are used for the bumper and text (see below) and B1 is used to toggle between blending on the main switch. These can al be remapped to do anything you want :)

  • Bumper and Flash Text -- Use these to interrupt the main performance visual with a bumper viz. This allows you to show something generic while you toggle through viz_ bases for the next best visual or allowing you to fix something. Flash text similarly can be blended over any visual or the bumper, but slide to far and we have simply text over black. The text SOPs are outside of the flash text so you can more easily update the text to the next performer or whatever.

This template is V1 and so you can expect regular updates as I improve the set up, but this will mostly stay fairly bare bones to encourage your own use-cases. The $5 this costs also comes with my attention to any question or issue you have related to this file -- I have a regular 8-5, but I'm so down to help you out however I can.

Let me see what you make with this! Happy designing!
